High Hickory House embodies the owner’s love and stewardship of the natural environment. The clever use of cantilevered floor systems allowed the footprint of the home to remain small, minimizing disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem. The result is a home that is nestled into the hillside while at the same time projecting into the forest canopy. The landscape is captured from the interior through large selective glazing, immersing the occupants in seasonal delights.
A home site that possesses the alluring features of mountain living with woodland flora traversed by clear water streams and distant views of neighboring ridge lines, doesn’t necessarily equate to easy building. The steep slope, northern exposure and adverse soil conditions presented challenges that required delicate building practices and further geotechnical engineering.
Construction of the home took place during the height of the building industry's supply chain issues. Although these setbacks, in addition to the increased engineering, affected the project scope, Green Light was proud to complete High Hickory House on budget.
